Asphalt shingle roofing for New Braunfels homes
Architectural and Class 4 impact-resistant shingles from the major manufacturers, installed the way the warranty requires — six nails, starter strip, ice-and-water in the valleys, ridge vent — on a permitted job.
Nine out of ten roofs in New Braunfels are asphalt shingle, and most of the ones going on in Veramendi, Mayfair and Meyer Ranch are the builder's 25-year three-tab or the cheapest architectural line that passes code. That's the roof the next hailstorm totals. A shingle roof done for this climate is a different product: a Class 4 impact-resistant architectural shingle (the UL 2218 test drops a two-inch steel ball on it four times without cracking the mat), synthetic underlayment instead of felt, a self-adhering ice-and-water membrane in every valley and around every penetration, a starter course that actually seals the eave, and ridge ventilation so the attic doesn't cook the shingles from underneath.
We install the mainstream lines — GAF Timberline HDZ and the Class 4 Timberline AS II, Owens Corning Duration and Duration FLEX, CertainTeed Landmark and Landmark ClimateFlex, Malarkey Vista and Legacy — and we'll tell you honestly which one your budget and your insurer favor. Every shingle roof is installed with six nails per shingle in the manufacturer's nail zone, which is what turns a 60-mph wind warranty into a 130-mph one, and every job gets a City of New Braunfels re-roof permit under our name.

Questions we get about shingle roofing
Which shingle brand is best for New Braunfels?
There isn't one best brand; there's a best class. Any Class 4 architectural shingle from GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed or Malarkey will outlast a Class 3 shingle here by years and earn the insurance discount. Between brands, pick the color and the warranty terms you like; we'll show you what's on the roofs near you.
What's the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?
Three-tab shingles are flat, single-layer, 20–25-year products rated for 60-mph wind. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are laminated, thicker, 30-to-lifetime products rated for 110–130 mph with the right nailing. Nobody should put three-tab on a house in the hail belt in 2026, and most insurers now price accordingly.
Do Class 4 shingles really stop hail damage?
They survive hail that would bruise or crack a standard shingle — the test is a 2-inch steel ball, roughly the March 2022 storm. They aren't bulletproof; softball hail damages anything. But most Comal County hail is one to two inches, which is exactly the range Class 4 was designed for.
How long does a shingle roof last in Texas?
Fifteen to twenty-five years for a properly installed architectural roof with ventilation, and it's usually the sun and the hail, not age, that end it. A poorly ventilated roof over a 140-degree attic can be done in twelve. See our guide on roof lifespan in Texas for the details.
Can I put new shingles over the old ones?
The city allows one overlay in some cases, but we won't do it. You lose the chance to inspect and repair the decking, the new shingles run hotter and age faster, the manufacturer warranty is reduced, and an overlay is a red flag for the next buyer's inspector. Tear-off is the right way and the price difference is small.
