Gutters

Seamless gutters sized for a Texas downpour

Six-inch seamless aluminum, oversized downspouts, and micro-mesh guards that shed live-oak leaves and spring tassels — installed with a new roof or on their own, with the water put where it can't hurt the slab.

Seamless gutters and downspouts being installed on a stone-and-stucco home

Most New Braunfels houses either have no gutters or five-inch builder gutters that overflow at the corners in the first spring thunderstorm. A Central Texas storm can drop two inches in an hour, and the water off a 2,500-square-foot roof has to go somewhere; on our expansive clay soils, dumping it at the foundation is how slabs crack and how the water gets under the lanai. So we install six-inch seamless aluminum on nearly every house, with three-by-four-inch downspouts, and we run the discharge away from the slab — extensions, splash blocks or a buried drain line.

The other local problem is live oaks. They drop small leaves year-round and tassels and acorns in spring, and they clog cheap foam and brush inserts in one season. Micro-mesh stainless guards are the only thing we've seen work under oaks, and we'll show you the difference on your own gutter before you buy. Gutter work is scheduled with a roof replacement — the fascia is exposed and the timing is right — or as a stand-alone job in a day.

Questions we get about gutters

How much do gutters cost in New Braunfels?

$12 to $18 per linear foot for six-inch seamless aluminum with downspouts, so $1,900 to $2,900 for a typical one-story house. Micro-mesh guards add $7 to $14 a foot.

What size gutters do I need?

Six-inch on nearly every house here. Five-inch gutters were fine when roofs were smaller and rain was gentler; a Central Texas downpour overwhelms them at the corners.

Do leaf guards work with live oaks?

Micro-mesh guards do — they shed the small leaves, acorns and spring tassels. Foam and brush inserts clog with pollen in one season.

Do I really need gutters in Texas?

On clay soil, yes. The water off the roof is what wets and dries the clay around the slab and cracks it. Gutters plus downspout extensions are the cheapest foundation insurance there is.

Should I do gutters with the new roof?

It's the best time — the fascia is exposed, the drip edge is new, and the crew is there. We price it as an add-on to the roof.
