Paying for a roof: insurance claims and financing

How a claim actually pays out in Texas, what you owe, and how to finance the deductible, the upgrade, or the whole roof.

If it's a claim

Hail and wind damage on a Texas homeowners policy is a covered loss, and the process is the same every time: inspection, claim, adjuster, scope, ACV check, build, depreciation. Your cost is your deductible — usually 1 or 2 percent of the dwelling coverage — plus anything you upgrade beyond the scope. We handle the contractor side of every step and never touch the claim itself. The details are on our insurance claims page; the law on deductibles is in the deductible guide.

If it isn't

An old roof, a roof the adjuster denied, a roof you want to replace before the next storm — that's a purchase, and most people finance part of it. We work with a national home-improvement lender: apply on your phone, soft credit pull to pre-qualify, terms from a 12-month same-as-cash promotion to 15-year fixed, funds paid to us at completion. A HELOC is usually cheaper if you have one; a credit card is fine for a repair or a deductible.

What we don't do

  • Waive, rebate or 'handle' your deductible — a crime in Texas.
  • Ask you to sign an assignment of benefits or a contingency contract on the porch.
  • Take a deposit before you've approved a written, itemized price, or ever take more than a third up front.
  • Inflate an invoice to the insurer.

Questions about paying for a roof

What financing do you offer?

Third-party home-improvement financing with a soft-pull pre-qualification, terms from 12 months (often 0% promotional) to 15 years, and approvals in minutes. It can cover the whole roof, just the deductible, or an upgrade to Class 4 or metal.

Can I finance my insurance deductible?

Yes. That's the most common use — the deductible plus a Class 4 upgrade, with the depreciation check paying down the balance when it arrives.

Do you handle the insurance company for me?

We handle the parts a contractor can: inspection, documentation, meeting the adjuster, reconciling the scope, filing supplements and sending the completion paperwork. The claim itself is between you and your insurer, and we'll never ask you to sign it over to us.

What is an assignment of benefits and should I sign one?

A document that hands your insurance claim to the contractor. Storm chasers use them. Texas now restricts them heavily, and you should not sign one — you lose control of the claim and the money.

Does insurance cover an old roof that leaks?

No. Insurance covers sudden damage from hail, wind, trees and the like, not wear and age. A roof that's just worn out is a replacement you pay for — which is where financing comes in.
