Standing-seam metal roofs for New Braunfels and the Hill Country

Half the houses going up west of I-35 want a metal roof, and half the houses that have one got a screw-down barn panel that's already leaking at the fasteners. We install standing seam the right way — and screw-down where it belongs.

Standing-seam metal roof on a limestone and cedar Hill Country home near New Braunfels

Metal fits this country. It looks right on a limestone-and-cedar house in Vintage Oaks or a farmhouse on FM 306, it shrugs off the hail that totals a shingle roof, it sheds live oak leaves instead of holding them, it reflects a Texas August, and it lasts fifty years. The catch is that "metal roof" covers two very different products, and a lot of homes around New Braunfels got the wrong one.

Standing seam is the residential product: 24-gauge panels with concealed clips and a raised seam, no exposed fasteners, panels that expand and contract without loosening anything. It's what you want on a house you'll live in. Screw-down (R-panel, PBR, ag panel) is the barn product: cheaper, exposed screws with rubber washers that dry out and back out in fifteen years, and every screw is a future leak. We install it on barns, workshops and porch roofs where it makes sense and where it's honest to say so. On a house, we quote standing seam — with high-temp synthetic underlayment, properly formed valleys, and trim details that don't rely on caulk.

Questions we get about metal roofing

How much does a metal roof cost in New Braunfels?

Standing seam runs $28,000 to $45,000 on a typical 2,500-square-foot home for 2026, two to two-and-a-half times a shingle roof. Screw-down panels run $14,000 to $22,000 but have exposed fasteners we'd rather not put on a house. Barns and shops are $7,000 to $12,000 for a 30-by-40. Everything is itemized.

Is metal loud in the rain?

Not over a house with a solid deck, underlayment and an attic — it's about the same as shingles. Over open purlins on a barn or a porch, yes, and some people like it.

Does hail dent a metal roof?

Big hail can dent lighter panels cosmetically without hurting them; 24-gauge standing seam with a low-gloss finish hides it well and stays watertight. Most insurers treat cosmetic denting differently from functional damage, and we'll explain your policy's cosmetic exclusion before you buy.

Will it cool the house?

Noticeably. A light Kynar finish reflects most of the sun's heat, and standing seam on clips creates an air gap. Homeowners here typically see attic temperatures drop by 20 to 30 degrees in August.

Can you put metal over my old shingles?

Sometimes, with a permit, over one layer of shingles on a sound deck with purlins or a slip sheet. We'll look at the deck and tell you whether it's a good idea for your house or a shortcut you'll regret.

How long will it last?

Standing seam: 50 years and often longer, with the paint warrantied for 30 to 40. Screw-down: 25 to 30 years for the panels, but the screws need replacing around year 15.
